Chapter Seventeen
The sharp gasp from Ash makes my statement all the more believable, and Baneberry stares at me with a guarded expression, clearly not buying the act. I can feel Ash staring at me, but donât dare make eye contact. Not when the cold fingers of guilt seem to tighten around my throat like a noose.
âSo eager,â Baneberry growls. His low voice makes my insides tighten with need. Gods, what is wrong with me? âLetâs see it, then. Show me how ready you are to join my harem.â
He jerks his chin at one of the consorts. She stands and sets the platter of meat on my lap. He wants me to feed him. Holy gods. Holding the plate steady on my lap, I peel a slice of greasy meat off. Juice runs down the fried meat, and my stomach clenches. Reverently, I hold the dripping meat up to Baneberryâs full lips. His dark eyes roam over my body in a way that makes it clear he finds me desirable. He opens his mouth and rips off a shred of flesh with his teeth. A drop of grease slips down his chin, disappearing into his beard.
âMy father died because of you,â he says, chewing slowly. âAnd for that Iâm grateful.â He shifts his thigh again, so I feel him grinding in to my pussy, and I have to stifle a moan. âBut he made an order that night you cast the curse. An order that Hemlock has failed to carry out.â
My heartbeat slowsâthen beats too fast.
Shit. Shit.
I nearly forgot. In the heat of the curse and then Hemlock claiming me, it completely slipped my mind that Elderberry ordered Hemlock to burn my city down. I guess when Hemlock spared Ivy City, I assumed it was safe. But Baneberry, this arrogant prick who believes himself sovereign, made no such promise.
âHe ordered Hemlock to burn Ivy City down,â heâs saying, confirming my fears, âand end the lives of its rebellious inhabitants.â
My hands begin trembling, but I manage to keep a stoic expression on my face. He runs his tongue over his lower lip, capturing a drop of grease before it disappears into his beard. âRemember?â He turns his head to look at me with those cold eyes, smacking his lips. âPlease tell me you remember. I would hate such news to surprise you now.â
I lower my gaze in submission, shut back the panic thatâs clawing its way out of my chest. âI remember.â
He places his index finger under my chin, lifting it until I meet his gaze. âAs much as I detest bloodshed, this is an order that must be carried out, along with our marriage. Otherwise, my fatherâs spirit will revisit this realm and unleash his wrath upon the Solar Empire. I canât be ruling an unstable empire, Wolfsbane. Can I?â
I swallow hard, but shake my head. âNo.â
He grunts in approval. âAfter I fuck you,â he says, âIâll take you with me and my armies to Ivy City on our march north.â Baneberry smiles coldly at me.
